The current move towards electrification would not have happened or would have taken a lot over without Tesla. The Model 3 really was a huge breakthrough by showing that you can build a car that people actually want to drive and make it affordable. That pretty much made all the excuses of the incumbents moot.
This sort of thing has always been standard practice in the automotive industry. The point is, this won't work to paper over the cracks in China with their massive oversupply.
The Chinese EV industry is overdue for consolidation. There are too many players chasing too few customers. This could be done in a relatively orderly fashion that leaves a few big players that are internationally competitive. I wanted to go to the US since the eighties but I couldn't afford it back then. By the time I could afford it, 9/11 had rolled around together with the suspension of civil rights and all the associated insanity. Then I thought I'd wait for sanity to return. I'm still waiting and I'm getting increasingly pessimistic I'll live to see that.
I think this is also the reason they have so many failures lately. They used to have no problem attracting top talent. I don't think that's the case any more.
